Role of Heat Shrink Sleeve in Protection of Piping Systems

Heat shrinks offer a complete range of kits for jointing and termination of PVC, PILC, EPR and XLPE cables from 1.1 kV voltage grades and applicable for 36 kV cable joints. The kits comprise heat shrink tubes, heat shrink coupler, heat shrink sleeve, mastics and other components for ensuring a complete termination. Heat shrinks have wound their way into a number of applications ranging from wire insulation to sterilization protection, food wrapping, medical device and aerospace sector.

One of the very common uses of these products is seen in the piping systems.  The heat shrink sleeve and coupler play an important role in protection of piping systems that are used in various industrial sectors. Pipes are a common feature in our daily lives being used as they are for water management and irrigations systems, sewer and drainage, mining industries and more. Pipes need to be safeguarded from environmental stresses and potential corrosion threats. Were it not for the heat shrink coupler and sleeve, pipes would have needed to be replaced at frequent intervals leading to wastage of lot of resources.

The heat shrink sleeve acts as a protective shield around the pipe safeguarding it from extreme temperatures as happens in the oil and gas industries. The extreme heat would have otherwise overheated the pipe, destroying its shape and the entire pipeline. Corrosive elements like sediments or water too is prevented from corroding the metal in the pipes by the heat shrink’s protective cover. Many of the pipes are laid underground and these have to bear tremendous amounts of pressure as they go about fulfilling their functions. The wrapping around these pipes offered by heat shrink products enhances the strength of the pipes and reduces the adverse impacts of the pressure if any.

The heat shrink products are made from top quality cross-linked polyolefin material and have come a long way from the ones that were in use many years ago. A number of benefits accrue from the use of these products; some of which include superior resistance to abrasion and impacts, ease of installation, better elastomeric features, resistance to UV rays, heat, sand-blasting, vibration and any other extreme industrial conditions. They can also be customized with regard to color, length and dimensions.

The adhesive lining that goes into the heat shrink sleeve is the key to effective working of the installed system and hence different types of adhesives are specified depending upon the operating conditions and design of the pipeline. The choice of the adhesive is determined by the anti-corrosive features it offers, adhesion strength and endurance to shear forces imparted by soil pressures and movement of pipes. In some cases, epoxy primer is also used; it is an optional element and works similarly as an FBE primer.

Heat shrink products play a vital role in almost all industrial sectors and therefore, they need to be of top quality. Price should not be a deciding factor while making a choice, the name of the manufacturer counts a great deal. Reputed manufacturers ensure that their products undergo stringent testing and hence sourcing your requirements from them is vital for guaranteeing long life of your products.
